International GIS Day marked at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in Kragujevac

GIS Day has been celebrated in the Republic of Serbia since 2013, with the holders being mostly higher education institutions (Faculty of Mining and Geology, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geography in Belgrade, Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Niš and Faculty of Natural Sciences in Novi Sad). Bearing in mind that GIS Day was not held in 2018, the GIS Association of Serbia has made every effort to change this year.

Organized by Faculty of Engineering , City of Kragujevac , and GIS Association of Serbia , the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in Kragujevac celebrated International GIS Day 2019 on November 13 At the beginning of the meeting, the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Dobrica Milovanovic, addressed the attendees, who spoke about the emergence of the Faculty, accredited study programs, the increase in the number of students enrolled and other current activities at the Faculty.

Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Goran Boskovic, emphasized that the largest number of students enrolled in 2019/2020 at the faculties of the University of Kragujevac comes from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (337). In addition, he presented the content and structure of the subject Geographic Information Systems and presented two examples of the application of GIS in waste management.

The first was a methodology for determining the optimal locations of waste collection sites and the number of containers and optimizing the movement of utility vehicles using GIS. The second example uses a mathematical model and software to calculate the cost of waste collection in order to determine the optimal location for a regional landfill and to identify wild landfills in the territory of the Republic of Serbia.

Zoran Đorović, Director of Business Innovation Center, spoke about the importance of opening data at the level of the City of Kragujevac and the results of the project “Open Data, Create on a Map”, while Dejan Stojanovic, Head of the IT Directorate, introduced the participants to the Data Center project in Kragujevac. which will be built in Kragujevac on an area of 5,000 square meters and worth EUR 30 million.

The GIS project “Improvement and Development of GIS” at the City of Kragujevac level within the EU PRO Development Program (UNOPS), was presented by the project manager, Dragan Jevtović, whose primary goal is the reconstruction of the existing GIS and the transition from a centralized to a decentralized system. work and getting so called “Point cloud,” which is generated by mobile mapping and spatial data collection.

The President of the GIS Association of Serbia, Miodrag Bogunovic, warned about the sustainability of completed and ongoing GIS projects, financed by the European Union (Exchange) and the United Nations (EU PRO UNOPS) and that with the aim of future implementation of GIS all local government representatives in cooperation with the SCTM should work on defining GIS jobs in the Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Government Jobs Directory.

In addition, the existing activities of the GIS Association of Serbia and the results of the project "Safe paths and trajectories of movement of elementary and high school students in Bor" were presented (, inviting all interested cities and municipalities to implement the same project.
